Book Review

I have just finished reading, Jim Castelli, How I Pray (Ballantine Books, New York, 1994)

The book comprises a short personal testimony from 26 people from various religious persuasions, as to how, why and who they pray to. He includes in the book well known people like Billy Graham, Robert Schuller and Richard J. Foster. He includes Hindu's, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, mormon's, A Sioux medicine man, Roman Catholics as well as various different protestant denominations.

He is coming from the viewpoint of a socialologist trying to understand the nature of prayer and he thinks we are all praying to the same god, only under a different name...

In saying that; many of the individual authors make the point that we can only pray in Jesus name, for we believe that there is only one God, who is 3 in one and that we have access to God the Father through Jesus the Son, and only through him, the books premise is not helpful at all.

Its an interesting book in that it gives insights into the personal belief systems of other faiths, and why they pray. This teaches me that its important to listen to others so as we can truly engage with them as to where they are at and not where we think they are at.

Though some of the authors have made some interesting and helpful points, I wouldn't recommend the book to new Christians to read to learn about prayer as there are many more helpful books on the subject.
